Snoring and Sleep Apnoea

Treatments Leeds

It is estimated that 45% of the population snores! Many people consult their GP about snoring, while others think it is something that they just have to live with. Certain lifestyle changes such as weight loss, changing sleeping positions, avoiding alcohol can improve things but may not make a big enough difference. At Chelwood Dental Care, we can provide a custom made device (mandibular advancement splint) which has been clinically proved to have a significant impact on snoring. These devices can also be useful for people who have been diagnosed with sleep apnoea but are unable to tolerate CPAP.

What is Snoring?

Simple snoring (without sleep apnoea) is caused by the airway partially closing during sleep. This creates vibration at the back of the throat and leads to the noise associated with snoring. This often leads to disturbed sleep for the person you share a bed with but it can also lead to poorer quality sleep.

It can lead to relationship issues, daytime sleepiness, increased stress and social embarrassment. Sometimes snoring can be part of a more serious condition - obstructive sleep apneoa.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnoea?

Obstructive sleep apnoea occurs when the airway collapses during sleep, leading to obstruction of the airway for 10 seconds or more. Untreated, this condition can lead to increased blood pressure, heightening risk of cardiovascular disease, strokes, diabetes and excessive daytime sleepiness.

OSA affects 4% of men and 2% of women, although it is estimated that 85% of people suffering from the condition remain undiagnosed. A sleep study is needed to diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea which can be arranged via your GP. However a mandibular advancement splint can be of benefit to these patients, especially if they are unable to tolerate the 'gold standard' treatment of a CPAP machine (a mask to wear overnight that pushes air into your airway to keep them open which you are asleep).

How Can my Dentist Help?

At Chelwood Dental Care, our principal dentist, Debbie Bennett has undertaken specific training in snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea. She is able to discuss your concerns and screen you for the more serious condition - obstructive sleep apnoea. Both simple snorers and those with OSA can benefit from treatment with a mandibular advancement splint. This is a device that is worn over your teeth at night and gently holds you lower jaw in a more forwards position. This keeps you airway open and prevents it from collapsing. This reduces the noise from snoring as well as allowing you to get a more restful nights sleep - reducing daytime sleepiness and the need for your partner to go to the spare room!
