What is it?

Botox is a purified for of the botulinum toxin (hence the name). It is best known for treating facial lines and wrinkles but is also used in medical treatments for overactive muscles.

Is it safe?

Botox is a safe treatment when administered by a trained professional who has excellent knowledge of facial anatomy. The key to safe treatment with a natural result is injecting with skill and precision. See what the NHS website has to say about Botox injections here

How does it work?

Anti-wrinkle injections work by relaxing targeted muscles in the face. This results in softening of lines and a fresher appearance, as these muscles no longer cause creasing of the skin. The three main treatment areas as forehead lines, frown lines and crows’ feet around the eyes. Carefully placed Botox can also be used to give the eyebrows a slight ‘lift’.

What happens during treatment?

Very small injections are made with a tiny needle into specific muscles that cause wrinkles. This prevents the developments of new wrinkles in these areas and softens any existing lines. The procedure has very minimal discomfort and usually takes around 10 minutes.

When will I see results?

Botox needs to work its way into the muscles before it has any effect. This can take around 3-5 days to start to take effect and final results will usually be seen in around 10-14 days. Effects typically last 3-6 months but can vary from person to person.

What are the risks of treatment?

When carried out by a skilled and trained professional, risks and side effects are thankfully, very rare. Some people get mild and temporary discomfort after treatment, some do experience a transient headache for a few hours. You may get a little spot bruising and inflammation around the injection sites.

Will Botox get rid of all wrinkles?

Some lines are wrinkles are the result of loss of elasticity due to sun damage smoking or ageing. Botox can only target lines caused by active muscles that are safe to treat. A full consultation is important to ensure that Botox is the right treatment to address your concerns.
